    Doch Chkae Heading to WACKEN Open Air 2019!

    It’s really happening!! Doch Chkae, the Cambodian Death metal band from the slums of Phnom Penh will play at the Wacken Open Air this year! We are really glad that our documentary inspired the world’s largest metal festival to give these boys a chance and that their Visa-complications from last year were finally sorted out in an amazing team-effort. More than 10000 people signed a petition last year for the authorities to grant Doch Chkae the necessary visa to allow the young Cambodian band to perform at the Wacken Open Air 2018.     After beating cancer, the legendary Damo Suzuki, former singer of krautrock band Can,  embarks on his first ever China tour. “Coming home after 3000 years” says the Japan-born rock shaman.       In Cambodia, the status of girls is still not very optimistic. Problems such as poverty, traditional concepts of male superiority, and domestic violence oppress many Cambodian women on a constant basis.     Slumdog Metal: Cambodian Street Kids Scream For Their Lives

      Doch Chkae means “like a dog” in Khmer. It’s also the name of the death metal band founded by two orphans born in the slums of Phnom Penh. Theara, the lead singer of Doch Chkae grew up together with the guitarist Vichey. They ate and drink and slept in these garbage-covered slums. Theara and Vichey dropped out of school when they were 9 years old. They drove garbage trucks around the city and made a living picking up waste. Because of the involvement of the international NGO “Mom Against Poverty”, Theara and Vichey were able to continue their studies and no longer had to worry about making a living.…
